Day 95

Well, I didn't awaken to a disaster in the Gathering Hall. Though I did wake up to two barbarians suffering greatly beneath a titanic cloud of ill humor. The eldest seems to have developed a knack for uncooperative behavior in the mornings (and evenings really) when he just decides that whatever it is necessary that he complete is the one thing he will not do. This leads to many little skirmishes over the breaking of our fasts and the completion of assignments his Wise Woman gives him. I fear that soon these little skirmishes will come to all out war, but today that is the least of my worries.

The day of the littlest barbarian's Birthing Day ritual looms ever closer and our settlement is by no means prepared to play host to a half dozen of our fellows from distant settlements. The Northernmost Brother will likely be attending and he may join a caravan travelling past the Distant Honorable Elder. If he brings her, it will mean I need only ride the caravans twice to return her to her settlement.

As I write these words, the littlest barbarian is in the hut we share protesting heartily the coming of dusk and her sleeping time. Would that she could stay awake forever and never miss a thing, then she would never have reason to cry. I still find it hard to believe she has been with us nearly a year, the time has flown by so fast. I always thought that if we brought another barbarian into the settlement I would be allowed to savor that first year of their adjustment to life among civilized peoples. Instead I fear that I have missed so many moments in the everyday rush of life. I am lucky to have been able to devote myself wholly to the taming of our barbarians. Others, like my partner, are forced to split their time between taming the barbarians and hunting to provide for their settlements.

Today, my partner has again been forced to stay late with the hunt. They are closing in on the target of their hunt, a few more days and our lives will return to normal. I find that I miss him of an evening more than I thought I would. It is not just the help he provides with the little barbarians, it is the presence of him in the confines of our settlement. It sounds sappy to write upon these pages, but I miss the sound of him.

The Most Honorable Elders have kept the older barbarians this evening, the gratitude I feel for their involvement in the lives of the little barbarians is boundless. I am grateful for all the elders in my life. I am no perfect researcher and whenever I stumble, they are there to steady me.

The Distant Honorable Elder has arranged for all of us to see a travelling extravaganza tomorrow. The elder pair of barbarians are extremely excited about this fact. The littlest barbarian has no idea what is in store for her tomorrow. I will be picking up the older barbarians from the Halls of Learning early tomorrow afternoon and heading westward to pick my partner up from the hunt and travel to the home of the Distant Honorable Elder.

I have not been to such an extravaganza since I was very young. Young enough that while I have been told we attended, I have no memory of the event. I am eager to see what the barbarians think of such a show.

For now, other than the occasional protest, the littlest barbarian is asleep and I have a few rare moments of solitude in the settlement. I should see what I can clean before the elder barbarians return to ransack the settlement.
